The premiere of Le Grand Macabre is coming soon on the stage of the State Opera!
It will be performed on 14 June at the State Opera in Prague
As part of the Opera Nova 2024 festival, the Czech premiere of György Ligeti's world premiere Le Grand Macabre will be staged at the Prague State Opera on 14 June. This work is considered one of the milestones of 20th century opera. Jiří Rožeň, the artistic guarantor of the Opera Nova Festival, will take the conductor's baton.
In the Czech premiere we present the work of a leading representative of the 20th century musical avant-garde, the Hungarian-Austrian composer György Ligeti. Le Grand Macabre is his only opera, but it is definitely worth paying attention to and in many ways it goes completely beyond the usual expectations associated with attending an opera performance. Ligeti was loosely inspired by Belgian playwright Michel de Ghelderode's play La balade du grand macabre, known here as The Ballad of the Great Skeleton, and provocatively called his version an "anti-antiopera".
